Picked for Performance: the Kookaburra Fuse Cricket Bat in Hybrid 5.1 Legend Grade

Overview

The Kookaburra Fuse cricket bat in Hybrid 5.1 Legend grade is a laminated bat for value focused club players. It pairs a 5.1 grade English willow face with alternative willow. Kookaburra pick Legend faces for performance during production. A high sweet spot sits about 200 to 210mm from the toe.

Fuse is Kookaburra's dedicated hybrid range for 2027. It took three years of development and uses laminate technology to join English and alternative willows. The aim is simple: a full profile bat at a much lower cost than an all English willow bat.

Fuse bats have a 25mm shorter blade and a 25mm longer handle. That trims weight without losing power or profile, so the pick up feels quick at 2lb 8oz to 2lb 10oz. The Armourtec face and bold graphics make it stand out at the crease. Buy it this autumn and you have months to prepare it before April.

Features

  • 5.1 Legend grade English willow face: unbleached willow selected for performance, with heavier staining.
  • Hybrid laminated blade: joins English and alternative willows to bring the price down.
  • High sweet spot at 200 to 210mm: rewards pulls, cuts and back foot drives.
  • Shorter blade, longer handle: 25mm shifted from blade to handle keeps the bat light in your hands.
  • 34 to 37mm rounded edges and a 63 to 67mm spine: a full profile for a hybrid bat.
  • Armourtec face and Hexa grip: a protected face and a textured grip from day one.

Design and Materials

Kookaburra make every bat by hand. On the Fuse, laminate technology bonds an English willow face to alternative willow. The face is 5.1 Legend grade. These faces are selected for performance but carry heavier staining than higher grades. Kookaburra describe the Fuse as the next generation of bat development.

The blade has a rounded edge profile, a 2mm rounded face and a standard toe. A 1 to 2mm scallop and a 10 to 12mm bow complete the shape. The oval handle is 25mm longer than standard, while the blade is 25mm shorter. Overall length stays at the standard 857mm Short Handle.

The staining is cosmetic. Kookaburra say Legend grade bats may still play as well as more expensive options. Be realistic about the trade-off, though. A hybrid will not match the feel of a top grade, all English willow bat. It does give you an English willow face and a full profile for a much smaller outlay.

Key Technologies

Hybrid Laminate Technology: English and alternative willows are laminated into one blade. It gives a full profile bat at a lower cost.
5.1 Legend English Willow Face: An unbleached English willow hitting surface chosen for performance. It is more heavily stained than higher grades.
Short Blade, Long Handle: The blade is 25mm shorter and the handle 25mm longer. It cuts weight without changing overall length.
210/34 High Sweet Spot Profile: A high sweet spot about 200 to 210mm from the toe with 34mm edges. It suits back foot play and hitting through the line.
Armourtec Facing: Kookaburra's durable anti-scuff sheet, applied to the face. It helps protect the willow from wear.
Hexa Grip: Kookaburra's grip with a hexagon surface texture. It creates a secure hold between your bat and gloves.
Kookaburra Pre-Prepared (KPP): Kookaburra carry out preparation on the blade before it leaves the factory. It gives you a head start before match play.
Oval Handle: The oval shape gives your hands a clear sense of the face angle. Many top order players prefer it for control.

VKS Review

This Kookaburra Fuse cricket bat gives you an English willow face and a full profile. It costs less than the Fuse 3.1 Icon. The high sweet spot and full edges make it a strong all rounder. The shorter blade keeps it lively in the hands. Off the back foot, the ball comes away cleanly from the high middle.

It suits club players, second team cricketers and anyone wanting a strong spare bat. If you want an all English willow blade, the Kahuna and Ghost ranges offer natural grades. If clean looks matter to you, the Fuse 3.1 Icon has a less stained face. You can also visit our London store in Ealing to compare weights before you buy.

Q&A Section

What is a hybrid cricket bat?

A hybrid bat laminates two willows into one blade. On the Fuse, an English willow face is joined to alternative willow. You get English willow where the ball strikes, at a lower cost than an all English willow bat.

Can I use a Kookaburra Fuse cricket bat in senior matches?

Kookaburra developed hybrid grades after the Laws of Cricket changed to allow laminated bats in senior cricket. Most club players can use one without issue. Some leagues and competitions set their own equipment rules, so check yours before match day.

Why does the Fuse have a shorter blade and longer handle?

Moving 25mm from the blade to the handle reduces the weight of the blade. Kookaburra say this keeps the power and profile intact. Overall length stays at 857mm, so it still suits most adult players.

What is the difference between the Fuse 5.1 Legend and the Fuse 3.1 Icon?

Both share the same Fuse shape, laminate build, Armourtec face and Hexa grip. The 3.1 Icon face has around four grains and fewer marks. The 5.1 Legend face is more heavily stained, which keeps the price lower.

Does the staining on a Legend grade face affect performance?

No, the staining is cosmetic. Kookaburra select Legend faces for performance during production. They say these bats may still play as well as more expensive options.

Does the Fuse 5.1 Legend need knocking in?

We recommend it, even though the bat is Kookaburra Pre-Prepared with an Armourtec face. Knocking in firms up the edges and toe so they cope with a hard ball. VKS offers a knocking-in service, priced at 25 pounds for bats bought from us.

Which weight should I choose?

Most adults are happy with a Kookaburra Fuse cricket bat at 2lb 8oz or 2lb 9oz. A lighter bat gives faster hands, while a heavier one carries more mass into the ball. Pick the weight you can control easily through a full net session.

Cricket Bat Size Guide

Bat size is determined by the player's height. If a player is between two sizes, the smaller bat is usually the better choice for control.

Bat Size Approx. Age Player Height (ft/in) Player Height (cm)
1 4 - 5 4'0" - 4'3" 122 - 129
2 6 - 7 4'3" - 4'6" 129 - 137
3 7 - 8 4'6" - 4'9" 137 - 144
4 8 - 9 4'9" - 4'11" 144 - 150
5 9 - 11 4'11" - 5'2" 150 - 157
Harrow 12 - 14 5'4" - 5'8" 163 - 172
Short Handle 15+ 5'8" - 6'2" 172 - 188
Long Blade 15+ 6'0" - 6'4" 183 - 193
Long Handle 15+ 6'2" and above 188+

Heights are a guide only. Junior players should always be able to comfortably lift and control the bat with the top hand alone.
