Padel is one of the fastest growing sports in the UK - and if you've played even once, you'll understand why. It's addictive, social, competitive, and strangely satisfying. But once you've caught the bug, there's one unavoidable step: buying your own racket. Unfortunately it is a lot more challenging than it should be.
What starts as a simple Google search quickly turns into a deep dive into unfamiliar terminology and mixed messages. Words like diamond head, round balance, carbon fibre face, and EVA core are thrown around like everyone just? knows what they mean.
Even more confusing is that no two rackets feel the same, and no two players agree on what's "best." You might read one review that says a racket is perfect for control and comfort, then another that says it's built for attacking players who already have a strong game. So? which is it?
To make things trickier, most players understandably don't jump straight into buying, they rent. But rentals are rarely consistent. One session you're handed a soft, control-focused racket. The next time it's a stiff, head-heavy beast that sends your backhand into orbit, or even worse the racket is so worn out it looks like a dog has bitten through it.
And it adds up. At £4-£6 per session, you'll spend more renting rackets over a few weeks than you would on buying your own racket. Plus, you're restarting your game every time you use a different one having to get used to it.
If you're serious about improving, owning your own racket is the way forward.
There are hundreds of models on the market, each with a slightly different shape, weight, balance, material, or feel. And most of them are designed for specific types of players:
But how do you know what level you're at, or what racket suits your game?
That's where most people get stuck. Reading specs online can be useful, but it's often written in technical language that assumes you already know what you're doing. YouTube reviews can help, but even then, the person reviewing might be playing at a completely different level.
At VKS, we've helped a number of padel players - beginners through to tournament regulars find the racket that suits their game, not just what's trending.
Here's how we make it easier:
At the end of the day, owning your own racket brings consistency. You start building muscle memory. Your timing improves. Your confidence grows. You're no longer adjusting to a new frame every week you're playing your game, with your equipment.
So, if you've had enough of guessing, renting, or endlessly scrolling through conflicting advice, come and chat with us. We'll help you make the right choice whether you're just starting out or levelling up.
